2005 Community Baby Shower

Shower participants line up for spaghetti lunch complete with salad, bread and green beans.
On Thursday, September 22nd, Wayne-Metro's Region IV Advisory Council hosted the 8th Annual Community Baby Shower at the Aquinas Center in Southgate. Ninety-six moms and dads participated making this year an all-time baby shower attendance record.
The event's planning committee focused a great deal of its efforts on fundraising. The committee's goal was to secure enough funding to provide a child safety seat to every family who attended. Thanks to the generosity of local foundations, businesses and civic organizations, every family took home a brand new car safety seat. The seats that were provided to shower participants can be used from birth to when the child reaches forty pounds and is ready to graduate on to a booster seat. Our friends at Target of Southland assisted the planning committee in locating the seats from warehouses all across the country and extended an additional 10% discount which stretched donations even farther.

Families also met with representatives from area service organizations and learned about topics such as car seat installation, shaken baby syndrome, breast feeding techniques, WIC, infant brain development, choosing quality day care and positive discipline. They were also given tips on maintaining healthy relationships and provided with employment resources.
