Even Start is a Federally funded family literacy program offered to income-eligible parents and their children ages birth to seven years of age in the cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park, Michigan. Even Start helps parents strengthen the literacy and parenting skills they need to help their children reach their full capacity as learners.
Even Start offers comprehensive and integrated services, including:
- Adult Education
- Early Childhood Education
- Parent-Child Interactive Literacy Activities
- Parent Education
The Even Start program teaches parents how to be their child's primary teachers and full partners in their child's education. Even Start also supports adults in meeting their educational goals and learning potential. Year-round, center-based classes are offered during daytime hours.
Parents As Learners
- General Education Development (GED) preparation, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Small class sizes
- Life Skills and Employment Training Opportunities
- Monthly, individualized home visits
- Family goal setting
Parents As Teachers
- Parent literacy training
- Parent support groups
- Literacy-based activities between parent and child
- Family centered events and field-trips
- Free books and literacy materials
Children As Learners
- Free, age-appropriate early childhood instruction
- Nutritional meals and snacks
- Safe and caring atmosphere
- Access to Head Start Program
